Born
December 21, 1976 in Vancouver BC to Mother Isabel
Robertson of Musgamaugw and Father Terry Dawson of
Village Island BC. Sam was raised by his
Grandparents, William and Daisy Robertson.
Sam learned
traditional technique and style by watching his
Grandfather William carve various masks, bent boxes,
talking sticks, drumsticks, and traditional copper
shields. One of his carvings was a fully
articulated Whale Mask that he carved specifically
for a Potlatch. Sam also harvests his own
Cedar Bark for creating Dance Regalia.
His Carving continues
as he is carving and learning from Simon Dick James,
assisting with projects such as Transformation
Masks.
Sam is a drummer and
sings the Traditional songs in Kwakẁala. He
has recently joined the Atlakim Dancers who do
traditional dance performances for many events.
